Information about the range of degree programmes offered
Get familiar with the range of degree programmes available at the University of Vienna. On this website, you can find profiles describing the degree programmes in German and in English.
Required language skills
- When applying for admission to any bachelor/diploma programme and the majority of the master programmes, you already need a proof of German language proficiency at level A2. To complete the admission procedure, you require a proof of German language proficiency at level C1.
- If you can provide proof of level A2 and have received an admission letter ("Zulassungsbescheid"), you can participate in the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU). There, you can take German courses for levels B1 to C1.
- For all master programmes instructed in English, as well as most multilingual master programmes you need a proof of English language proficiency.
- For the bachelor programme in International Legal Studies you need a proof of English language proficiency at level B2.
- For doctoral and PhD programmes, the required language proficiency depends on the field of doctoral research and the topic.

Admission to a degree programme
Required documents
In addition to the required proof of your German and/or English language proficiency, you also need a secondary-school leaving certificate/your higher education degree certificate, including a translation into German/English by a certified, court-sworn translator. You do not need an apostille. However, for the time being, you can also apply online for admission to a degree programme without secondary-school leaving certificate/higher education degree certificate. You must upload these documents as fast as possible.
It is of the utmost importance that you obtain your secondary-school leaving certificate as soon as possible. The longer it takes you to upload the documents, the later we can process your application for admission to a degree programme. Please take into account that the processing of your application may take several weeks due to the large number of applications.
If you do not upload your documents or submit them very late, you may face the following consequences:
- You miss registration deadlines for the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU) or for courses.
- This means that you cannot be admitted in the semester you've applied for, but one semester later.
- If there are deficiencies regarding your documents, we cannot issue an admission letter and you cannot be admitted despite successfully participating in the entrance exam procedure.
We therefore advise to only submit applications without secondary-school leaving certificates in special situations (e.g. the current situation in Ukraine). However, the consequences mentioned above may still apply in these situations.
